Server side development

While a frontend developer uses HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create graphical elements on the website that the user immediately encounters, the backend developer is responsible for the functions, data management, and storage that remain invisible to the user's eyes.

The backend deals with processes running in the background: server-side programming, verifying and processing data from forms, and creating statistics.

              class Fruit {
                // Properties
                public $name;
                public $color;

                // Methods
                function set_name($name) {
                  $this->name = $name;
                }
                function get_name() {
                  return $this->name;
                }
              }

Several programming languages are suitable for backend development; when we talk about web development, PHP is one of the most common.

What does a backend developer do?

  1. Interpretation of requirements: Backend programmers understand and interpret project requirements, which are usually determined by the client or project manager. This includes defining the functionality of the application or system.
  2. Database design and management: Backend programmers design and develop the database that stores the application or system data. PHP is often used with server-side database management systems such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.
  3. Business logic and algorithms: Backend programmers write and implement the business logic and algorithms necessary for the application or system to function properly. This can include, for example, managing user permissions, processing and manipulating data, and verifying and validating data.
  4. PHP frameworks: Backend programmers often use PHP frameworks such as Laravel or Symfony, which help them develop web applications or systems efficiently and in a structured way. These frameworks have pre-made functions and components that help them develop faster and manage applications more easily.
  5. APIs and web services: Backend programmers develop APIs (Application Programming Interface) and web services that enable communication between applications and systems. This can be a RESTful API or other communication protocol that allows clients to access and manipulate server-side data.
  6. Error and performance optimization: Backend programmers are responsible for detecting and fixing errors.
